ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article presents a lexical and semantic analysis of the toponymy of the village Stepnaya Shentala in the Koshkinsky District of Samara Oblast. Considering a number of aspects of the historical past of the Erzya population of Stepnaya Shentala, it is interesting to correlate the results obtained with the materials of the author’s research in such Erzya villages as Staraya Shentala, Staraya Besovka, Novaya Karmala, Staroe Vechkanovo. The article also provides a comparative analysis of the toponymy data of Stepnaya Shentala with the corresponding elements of other Erzya toponymic
spaces of the Samara Volga region and adjacent territories.
Objective: to identify the common and special in toponymy of the village of Stepnaya Shentala in comparison with the toponymic space of villages Staraya Shentala, Novaya Karmala, Staraya Besovka, Staroe Vechkanovo.
Research materials: the author’s own field materials collected during expeditions to the Erzya villages of Samara and Ulyanovsk regions, dictionaries of geographical names of these regions, dictionaries of the corresponding languages and linguistic reference materials.
Results and novelty of the research: for the first time, a comprehensive study of the toponymy of the Stepnaya Shentala was conducted; 24 geographical names were introduced into scientific circulation; additional materials on previously studied toponyms (in particular, on the Shentala oikonym) were provided. The formularity and system of appellatives in the structure of the toponyms of Mordovia-Erzya Stepnaya Shentala demonstrates the proximity with similar elements of the toponymic spaces of Staraya Besovka, Novaya Karmala, Staroe Vechkanovo and, at the same time, differs significantly from those in Staraya Shental. At the same time, it should be noted that the linguistic influence of the settlers who founded the Stepnaya Shentala from the Staraya Shentala was not significantly reflected in the local toponymic nomenclature. The relevance of the study is dictated by the need to quickly fix the toponymic material of the Erzya dialects of the Samara Oblast, which are undergoing rapid processes of substitution and russification.
