Traditional economic sectors of the Ob Ugrians: the modern adaptive strategies in the market economy

Abstract. Introduction: significant changes are taking place in the economic sphere of life of the Ob Ugrians under the influence of modernization processes. Theirs studying attracts attention of ethnologists, economists, sociologists. Objective: to research the economic activities of indigenous people in rural communities of KhMAO – Yugra,
including consideration of the functioning of the traditional sectors of the economy and informal economic relations arising in the market economy. Research materials: the article is based on field materials collected in the summer of 2017 in Beryozovsky,Beloyarsky and Oktyabrsky Districts of KhMAO – Yugra. Basis of the research has become the cross-disciplinary discourse with the use of comparative-historical and phenomenological methods. Results and novelty of the research: the article provides an assessment of the fisheries and other sectors of the traditional economy as an adaptive strategy of the population in a modern market economy under the conditions of high unemployment. There are key problems in the development of fisheries: the reduction of catches of valuable kinds of fish and the distribution of catch quotas. For the first time the author pays attention to the presence specific forms of market trade in the region, described by C. Geertz. This trade creates a flexible model
of informal personal contacts, which can be regarded as reciprocal. “Bazaar economy” increasingly concerns the distribution of fishery products. Hunting, farming, horticulture although not market-oriented, but they are no less significant in modern adaptive strategies of indigenous people. Materials and conclusions of the article can be useful for making recommendations to regional and local authorities for the regulation of commercial client relations, generated by the economic activity of the population.
