ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article continues the cycle of the author’s publications on reincarnation in the cultures of indigenous peoples in comparison with the traditions of the Ob Ugrians. The subject of its consideration is the traditional worldview of the Forest Nenets living in area of Numto Lake.
Objective: to identify the peculiarities of ideas related to reincarnation that have developed among the Forest Nenets of Numto in the context of Khanty and Nenets cultural contacts in this territory.
Research materials: field materials of the author; published data from scientific articles and monographs.
Results and novelty of the research: the author for the first time recorded and systematized the ideas and rituals of the Numto ethnographic group of the Forest Nenets, based on the belief in the reincarnation of tribal ancestors. The existence in their environment of the terms of reincarnation of the Kazym Khanty, as well as the absence of such customs among the Tundra Nenets and Forest Nenets of the Pur River gives us reason to believe that the traditions of reincarnation of the Numto Forest Nenets were formed under the influence of the Khanty culture. At the same time, they have distinctive features, most clearly manifested in the rituals of divination and customs associated with the naming of newborns.
Key words: Forest Nenets, Numto Lake, ideas about the soul, reincarnation, traditions of divination, naming, Ugric and Samoyed contacts
Acknowledgements: the author expresses her gratitude to the informants, first of all, V. A. Vylla and T. A. Stashkina for their assistance in the trip to the village of Numto and this work.
