ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article considers the problem of migration processes of the Northern ethnic group of the Mansi in the historical period XVI–XVIII centuries. Their migration from the foothills of the Ural Mountains (headwaters of the Northern Sosva River) and the gradual settling of the marshy taiga territories of the Ob region: the lower reaches of the North Sosva River and the part of the Lyapin River (Sygva). The subject of the research is the culture of the group of the Sosva Mansi (local community) during the period of active migration (communication) in military campaigns (magistral culture) under the leadership of the mythologized bogatyrs – ōtyrˊs (tribal leaders), which develop the sacred space in new territories.
Objective: an attempt to reconstruct the realities and events that have a connection with the historical past of the Northern Mansi in the period of their settling on the territory of modern residence.
Research materials: the study is based on the analysis of sources of well-known foreign, Soviet and Russian ethnographers, oral folk art of the Mansi and field materials of the author.
Results and novelty of the research: materials on the magistral culture, built on the war in a single local group, are introduced in scientific circulation. On the example of the epic legends about the paths of the bogatyr mythologized into the tribal spirit Namyŋ Ōtyr ‘Eminent bogatyr’ and his son Ōtyr pyg ‘Son of Ōtyr’ it was revealed: 1. The presence of the fortified “principality-town” Akhvtasus ‘The Stone town’ in XVI century in the upper reaches of the river Northern Sosva, where the kin of the Eminent bogatyr’ lived. 2. Gradual population outflow from the upper reaches of the Northern Sosva, because of the military campaigns; migration and settling of people at the mouth of the Northern Sosva and the Lyapin River (Sygva, Sakv-ya). 3. The process of developing of modern territory of residence and forming of the Sosva-Lyapin group of the Mansi.
Key words: Ural, Akhvtas us ‘The Stone Town’, Namyŋ Ōtyr ‘Eminent Bogatyr’, Usyn Ōtyr ‘The Town Bogatyr’, Ōtyr Pyg ‘Son of Ōtyr’, military road, settling.
