ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to the study of verbs of intellectual activity in the Western (Kazym and Shuryshkar) and the Eastern (Surgut) dialects of the Khanty language and in the Sosva dialect of the Mansi language. Lexical and semantic parallels, oppositions and semantic shifts in their meanings are described. An attempt is also made to determine the ratio of interlanguage equivalents combining both languages and dialects. This group of verbs has the following features: a small number of Ob-Ugric equivalents and an exceeding number of specific meanings developed in Mansi and Khanty lexemes. The relevance of the theme is determined by the undeveloped lexicology of the Khanty and Mansi languages, the lack of research on the identification and semantic classification of verbal lexical and semantic groups (LSG) in comparative terms.
Objective: to reveal the internal organization of lexical and semantic groups of verbs of intellectual activity and to characterize semantic interactions between its members.
Research materials: verbs of intellectual activity of the Mansi and Khanty languages (Kazym, Shuryshkar, and Surgut dialects), received by the authors from informants and extracted from dictionaries of the Khanty and Mansi languages and texts. If necessary, examples from the Vakh dialect are given.
Results and novelty of the research: the lexical and semantic group of verbs of intellectual activity of the Ob-Ugric languages is described for the first time: the differential features of the semantics of the studied verbs are revealed; the relationships of these verbs and the features of their compatibility, primary and derived LSG meanings of these verbs are determined; their aspectual variants are revealed; the main verbs of the group are described and their features are indicated; the semantic structure of polysemantic verbs is determined. A comparison of semantic structures of words of similar meaning in the Ob-Ugric languages allows us to conclude that the main meanings of the verb “to think” coincide in the dialects of the Khanty and Mansi languages. The meanings of the Khanty verb artaԓәty have both coincident meanings and specific ones according to dialects. Several meanings of this verb have equivalents in the Mansi language, as well as their own special synonyms and specific meanings.
Key words: verb, intellectual activity, lexical and semantic group, semantics, Ob-Ugric languages.
Acknowledgements: the authors express their gratitude to all informants who speak the Mansi and Khanty languages.
