ABSTRACT
Introduction: chronology and time accounting in national calendars for combination of lunar and solar calendars provides the insertion of additional time. There are no in the literature comparative studies of the practice of inserts in calendars of the Urals and Siberia peoples.
Objective: study and comparison of the practice of inserts in calendars of the peoples of the Urals and Siberia by analyzing of calendar vocabulary.
Research materials: calendars of peoples of the Urals and Siberia of 18–20th centuries.
Results and novelty of the research: in the research we have analyzed the practice of intercalates (inserts) in calendars of the peoples of the Urals and Siberia; investigated the semantics of additional time (insert) in calendars of the Ob Ugric peoples (Khanty, Mansi), Samoyeds (Nenets, Selkups), Altaians, Buryats, Yakuts, Evenks, Evens, Negidals, Udeges, etc. For the first time we made an analysis of the calendar vocabulary and semantics of terms denoting the intercalary months among some Tungus-language peoples, Nenets, Yakuts and Buryats; identified correlation of semantics of insert time among the Nenets with features of the structure of deer’ horns; showed the difference in procedure of insertion among different groups of Tungus-language peoples; proposed interpretation of “hidden time” (ektenkire) of some Evenk groups. there is no direct indication of the existence of an additional time insertion procedure in calendars of Evens having control system of time accounts according parts of body (along with the calendar vocabulary based on phenology). We proposed semantics of an inserted month as “rootless” or “born from nowhere”; showed the correlation of semantics of an inserted month with the image of secretly born son or the “rootless hero” in etiological myths of some peoples of Siberia (Komi, Buryats, Yakuts); disclosed the influence of calendar traditions of some peoples (Iranians, Mongols) on the technique of inserts (intercalates) among the Western Buryats, Altaians and Yakuts.
Key words: calendars of peoples of the Urals and Siberia, intercalation.
