ABSTRACT
Introduction: phytonymy is an important lexical-semantic group of nominal vocabulary, the study of which is essential not only for linguistics, but also for other disciplines (history, ethnography). In this paper the author studies the names of two bushes – hawthorn and buckthorn – in the Finno-Permian languages, which are one of the main branches of the Finno-Ugric language group, excluding the Ugric languages (Ob-Ugric and Hungarian).
Objective: to describe the folk names of hawthorn and buckthorn in the Finno-Permian languages, to determine their etymology, and to identify the semantic models of composite phytonyms.
Research materials: more than a hundred folk phytonyms, most of which are composite nouns, usually consisting of two or three components. The lexical material for the study is collected from a number of printed sources, both lexicographical works and scientific articles. For the convenience of semantic analysis, phytonyms are combined into lexical-semantic clusters.
Results and novelty of the research: it has been revealed that in the Finno-Permian language branch there are more than a hundred different names for hawthorn and buckthorn, both simple and composite. Among them there are also a number of 225 Bulletin of Ugric Studies. Vol. 11, № 2. 2021.
loanwords and words belonging to the lexicon of ancient origin. The etymology of phytonyms and the ways of their word formation (suffixation or compounding) are considered. Semantic models, according to which complex names of bushes, common for two or several languages, are formed, have been defined and systematized. Such models include names of places of growth, substances, and various animals as determinative components. A comparative study of the names of hawthorn and buckthorn in the Finno-Permian languages is carried out for the firsttime.
Key words: Finno-Ugric languages, Finno-Permian languages, vocabulary, phytonyms, hawthorn, buckthorn.
