ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to the study of the linguistic representation of the category of space in the hydronymy of the Ob-Irtysh interfluve. The relevance of the study is due to the significance of the names of water bodies as a source of information about the culture and mentality of the indigenous population of the region.
Objective: to identify the role of spatial appellatives in the hydronymic system of the Ob-Irtysh Interfluve; to reveal their ethno-cultural specifics.
Research materials: topographic map of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug of 2003, field materials.
Results and novelty of the research: for the first time, using the example of wide toponymic material, the role and ethnocultural features of appellatives with the meaning of space in the toponymy of the Ob-Irtysh interfluve are revealed. Semantic and etymological analysis is carried out. The vocabulary expressing orientation in space and various landscape features are identified. It is established that all hydronyms are of Khanty origin (in the graphic version they are used in Russified form). Almost all names of water sources are composite. The organizing center determinants in them are geographical terms denoting the types of hydro-objects. The cases of the geographical water nomenclature performing attributive functions, when the location of a geographical object is characterized relative to another water source, have been identified. Simple (one-word) hydronyms are cases of toponymization of geographical appellatives. As a rule, they are used to designate a oneof- a-kind object on any closed territory. The appellative vocabulary was formed under the influence of geographical, natural, and social factors. It contains both universal features peculiar to the appellative vocabulary of other languages, and specific ones, for example, using the the lexeme shănsh ‘back (a part of body)’ instead of the postposition за ‘behind’. It is concluded that the appellative vocabulary with the semantics of space was formed in antiquity. It reflects the actual concepts for a person of that time.
Key words: space, hydronymy, appellative, Ob-Irtysh interfluve, semantic and etymological analysis
