ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article presents the results of the analysis of the methods of formation of the names of a healer and a sorcerer in the dialect vocabulary of three dialects of the Karelian language (proper Karelian, Livvik and Ludik). This vocabulary is interesting not only from the point of view of word formation, motivational and etymological processes, but also from the standpoint of the meanings of the lexemes nominating a healer and / or a sorcerer themselves.
Objective: to determine the ways of nomination of a healer and a sorcerer in the Karelian language; to identify how the pagan (mythological) beliefs of the Karelian peoples are reflected in the nomination processes.
Research materials: Karelian linguistic sources (dictionaries of dialects of the Karelian language).
Results and novelty of the research: in a scientific article, for the first time, a comprehensive study of Karelian names nominating a healer and a sorcerer was carried out. 41 dialectisms were subjected to complex analysis. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the names subject to analysis have different origins: the Baltic-Finnish heritage, substantival participles, denominal and compound nouns. A significant group of lexemes are borrowings, mostly of Old Russian and Northern Russian origin. The motifs of the nomination by the type of disease and by the attributes used by healers / sorcerers reflect in diseases the mythological representations of the Karelian peoples and their beliefs. There is a semantic shift in some lexemes.
Key words: Karelian language, dialectisms, names of a healer, names of a sorcerer, etymological analysis, motifs of nomination, word formation
