ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article describes the lexical units with an identifying nomination characteristic that allows an addressee of speech to choose the desired object from the field of his direct or indirect perception.
Objective: determination of the specifics of identifying words and determination of their role in a literary text.
Research materials: constructions with identifying words extracted from the novel by the Mordovian writer A. K. Martynov “Davoldo Ikele” (“Before the Storm”).
Results and novelty of the research: it was revealed that the semantics of a word is largely formed under the influence of its role in the message. Bearing in mind that a sentence constantly realizes two main communicative functions –identification of an object and predication that introduces the message, – the semantics of the word adapts to the fulfillment of one of these two designations. Taking into account the communicative function, words are divided into identifying and predicate. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time in Russian Finno-Ugric studies the notion of identifying and predicate words is introduced. The main attention is paid to the characteristics of identifying words and to identification of their place in a literary text. It is noted that such words have a denotative meaning and serve to correlate the statement with a specific referent. The author chooses them depending on the properties of an identified object and the background on which they appear and from which they must be separated. An individualizing feature is introduced into the composition of the value of a nomination. In the work we have chosen for analysis, proper names (toponyms and anthroponyms), personal and demonstrative pronouns, pronominal adverbs, and common nouns act as identifying words.
Key words: word semantics, identifying nomination, denotatum, message role, correlation with a referent
