ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to the search for the Khanty component in the ethnic composition of the Northern Selkup people (Selcups). The territorial group of the Upper Tolka Selkups is considered. As it is assumed, the Khanty people actively participated in its formation.
Objective: to reveal the Khanty component in the ethnic history of the Northern Selkups.
Research materials: the author’s field materials, data from scientific literature and archival sources.
Results and novelty of the research: it was concluded that the Khanty component in the ethnic composition of the Selkups is determined mainly by the contacts of the Upper Tolka Selkups with their relatives from the tributaries of the Vakh River assimilated by the Khanty people. Some groups of the Selkups lived on the Vakh River until the XVII century, and others came to its tributaries during the XVII–XIX centuries, when the main way of Selkup migration from the Middle Ob River to the Taz and Turukhan ran through the Vakh. The Selkups, who did not leave the Vakh River to the north, were
assimilated by the Khanty people. A group of the Selkups who found themselves as a result of resettlement in the upper reaches of the Tolka River, despite the strong Khanty influence, could preserve their Selkup identity. The distance of 400 km separating the Upper Tolka River from the Vakh River reduced the degree of this influence, and administrative and economic factors increased it: the village of Laryak on the Vakh for a long time, until 1957, was for the center for residents of the Upper Tolka River. They obeyed this center and received supplies from it. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that until now scientists have not studied the Khanty component in the ethnic composition of the Selkups.
Key words: Selkup people, Khanty people, ethnic history, ethnic composition, assimilation
