ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to a little-studied episode in the history of Russian folk studies related to the expedition of the Moscow Conservatory in the spring of 1938 to the Tyumen Oblast to record the musical folklore of the Mansi people. The effectiveness of
the collectors’ work (musicologist N. M. Vladykina and philologist L. A. Bachinsky), which lasted for several months, is reflected in the voluminous corpus of documentary sources stored in the funds of the Kvitka Folk Music Research Center. Until now, these rare evidences
of the uniqueness of the Mansi folk culture have not been available to a wide range of specialists and therefore have not been the object of careful study.
Objective: introduction into scientific circulation of an extensive set of materials from the folklore expedition to the Mansi people, carried out in 1938 by specialists of the Moscow Conservatory, as well as an assessment of the content of field materials, their textual
analysis and classification.
Research materials: phonographic recordings, passports of sound recordings, questionnaires of performers, auditory recordings of melodies, notebooks with song lyrics collected as a result of the expedition.
Results and novelty of the research: the scientific novelty of the article lies in the identification of fully documented sources reflecting the circumstances and results of the 1938 Mansi expedition (from the funds of the Kvitka Scientific Center for Folk Music and the Russian
National Museum of Music (RNMM) and in the initial introduction of field materials into scientific circulation in a comprehensive form. The main results of the study are to recreate the circumstances of the Mansi expedition (duration, route, etc.), identify the names of
folk performers and systematize data on all respondents who participated in phonographic sessions and auditory recordings; preliminary assessment of the corpus of recorded texts and their genre classification; primary textual analysis of 20 field notebooks, in terms of the
accuracy of recording folklore samples and the reliability of translations into the Russian language.
