ABSTRACT
Introduction: in the article on the example of the Ob Ugrians (Khanty and Mansi peoples), the post-Soviet practices of dealing with the cultural heritage of these peoples, aimed at preservation and construction of their ethnic identity, are considered.
Objective: to identify the factors and institutions of formation of the ethnic identity of the Ob Ugrians outside the traditional way of life; to reveal personally motivated aspects of the (re)production of the ethnocultural heritage of the peoples.
Research materials: field materials of the author obtained during ethnographic expeditions to Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. as well as materials of regional media, theoretical and empirical studies in the field of ethnic identity and ethnocultural heritage.
Results and novelty of the research: the factors of actualization of the ethno-cultural heritage of the Ob Ugrians in the context of the processes of “ethnic revival” are revealed. The research showed that in the conditions of the loss of many original cultural features the content of post-Soviet identificational Ob Ugrians’ practices is largely determined by the participation in these processes of the ethno-cultural heritage of these peoples. The study is based on the concept of “cultural transfer”, which focuses on the “cultural shift” that occur when cultural elements are “imported” from one cultural environment to another. This approach allows us to take a fresh look at the problem of tradition and cultural heritage of the Ob Ugrians. The author concludes that in the process of transfer, some samples of culture (cultural forms) can transfer into the modern context: (1) in a relatively unchanged form (in this case, we are talking about authenticity, tradition); (2) go through creative/ original processing (imagination, simulacra). Different groups of the Ob Ugrians and their individual representatives are involved in the socio-cultural practices of (re)production of ethnic identity with varying degrees of activity.
Key words: Ob Ugrians (Khanty and Mansi peoples), ethnocultural heritage, identity, tradition, cultural transfer, social boundaries
Acknowledgments: the article was prepared in the framework of a research grant funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation (grant ID: 075-15-2022-328).
