Associative analysis of the concept of ‘house’ from the position of gender (on the material of the Khanty language)

Abstract. Introduction: the article presents new results of associative experiment, obtained by the author in the frameworks of the anthropocentric direction. For the first time in the Khanty language the results of the associative experiment revealing the mentality of the Khanty people are presented. Objective: the analysis of associative field hot ‘house’ as the fragment of the picture of the world and verbal memory of people, the image of the world reflecting gender and cultural stereotypes of modern linguistic consciousness of the speakers of the Khanty language. Research materials: the associative experiment was conducted among Khanty native speakers in Khanty- Mansiysk, Beloyarsky, and Kazym of Khanty-Mansiysk Results and novelty of the research: the analysis of the results of the associative experiment showed that in the Khanty everyday consciousness the concept hot ‘house’ is associated with the road among men, that’s why for them is so important the words hotәӈ ‘family’, hoshәm ‘warm’ and hotєm ‘house=my’; among women this concept is associated with its different characteristics – aj ‘little’, vөn ‘big’, kӑrәshh ‘high’, jiԓәp ‘new’, huramәӈ ‘beautiful’, jӑm ‘good’. The nouns predominate by the frequency of naming; also women more often name the signs of the house and its parts, and men name the types of houses by material; words and notions related to the kind of their activity: vўԓjet ‘deer’, pөshas ‘fence for deer’, vўԓy hot ‘house for deer’, pөsәӈ hot ‘house for a smudge’. Common are the reactions hotәӈ johԓam ‘family’, aӈki ‘mother’, hoshәm hot ‘warm house’ and jўh hot ‘wooden house’. These common four reactions reflect the basis of the mental concept of the Khanty house for the modern carrier of the Khanty language. The relevance of the study lies in the representation of new results of the associative experiment obtained by the author in the framework of the anthropocentric direction.
