Baltic-Finnish terms with the semantics ‘settlement’ in historical and cultural perspective

ABSTRACT
Introduction: formation of such an important cultural phenomenon as the settlement network was reflected in the system of terms of varying genesis and areal relationships. In the etymology and semantics of the terms the ethno-cultural context reveals, that gave rise to their appearance.
Objective: analysis of the terms of Baltic-Finnish origin marking the various structural types of settlements against the ethno-linguistic, historical and cultural background, using the toponymic contexts which help reconstruct some early stages of their etymological and semantic evolution.
Research materials: the primary source of the research was data from a number of dialectal dictionaries of the Karelian and Vepsian languages, as well as their card indexes stored in the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History, Karelian Research Centre of the RAS (ILLH KarRC RAS). We widely used field materials of the Scientific Toponymic Card Index of ILLH KarRC RAS1, GIS «Toponymy of Karelia», as well as data from the cadastral books of XV–XVII centuries.
Results and novelty of the research: analysis has shown that the Baltic-Finnish (Karelian and Vepsian) settlement terminology in the territory of the Southern Karelia was forming in the middle of the 2nd millennium CE in the context of an actively developing agricultural economy, the cluster-type settlement pattern mediated by this economy, and persistent Russian language contacts. For the first time an etymological interpretation of the Karelian term hieru is suggested, and the main lines in the semantic evolution of the terms kylä, kontu and
ryhjäare traced.
