ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to the problem of critical limit of neglect of reading, what is especially important in conditions of modern literary criticism. «National program for Reading Promotion and Development» establish the fact: «The current situation with reading in Russia is a systemic crisis of reading culture».
Objective: to reveal some aspects of one of the actual and vital problems of the modern world – the problem of reading; to reveal the existing problems of modern reading and to offer possible solutions.
Research materials: the research is based on the idea of reading as a process of knowledge of the world; forming of emotional and logical connections between a book and a reader’s consciousness; comprehension of the semantic and ideological content of the literary text.
Results and novelty of the research: the result of the article is the disclosure of one of the most important functions of reading, first of all, a literary text as a mean, as a way of personality forming, awareness of own place in the world. Foundation of the importance and complexity of the problem of reading in the article is based on literary texts, in which the problem is considered from different points of view and in different aspects. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the disclosure of the content of the concept ‘reading’ in the works of fiction of different eras and cultural traditions. One of the aspects of scientific novelty is associated with the disclosure of the mechanism, how reading fosters respect for the native word, prevents its desecration, contributes to its active life, the continuation of development in the culture of its people. The article is an attempt to outline some ways of forming the ability to see in a literary work the essence, a living phenomenon, directly acting on the soul of a reader. Reading is considered not only as the possibility of development of the receptivity of the mind, but as an extension of its productive ability.
