Abstract:The article investigates an ancient Mansi (Vogul) myth. The myth was written down by Bernát Munkácsi in 1888-1889, using the Finno-Ugric transcription system, and was later transliterated into the Cyrillic graphic system of the Mansi literature language. The original Mansi text was translated to Russian, while style and meaning of the ancient text were preserved. The main idea is only revealed at the end of the text: A bird, named lӯly, picks up the soil from the bottom of the ocean. The soil is attached to the front corner of the house of the Wife and the Husband. The earth is growing quickly and everything else revolves simultaneously. The Wife found a little plant on the earth, and she brought it to her Husband. He looked at the little plant and cut his fi nger, the Wife licked blood from her Husband’s fi nger, she got pregnant. The Wife left the house and gave birth to a son. Their son grew up fast. He is a good hunter. The Wife and the Husband understood that their son could life on the Earth, and they went back to heaven. The man was created by the celestials, by the Wife and the Husband.
