ABSTRACT
Introduction: mathematical terminology as the language’s foundation is crucial in the process of cognition of the surrounding world. However, the mathematical terms of the Udmurt language have not yet been the subject of special scientific research. This study is devoted to the study of differential signs of mathematical terms in the system of the modern Udmurt language in comparison with the terminological system of the Uzbek language. The choice of a language of comparison is due to the significant contribution of Uzbek scientists to the development of mathematics. In particular, a
special place here is occupied by the name of Muḥammad al-Khwārizmī, who can be considered the founder of the science of algebra. Comparative analysis of mathematical terminological systems will allow further improvement of the terminological layer of the vocabulary of the Udmurt language.
Objective: to identify differential signs and features of mathematical terms in the Udmurt and Uzbek languages.
Research materials: empirical basis of the research are the “Dictionary of Mathematical Terms in the Udmurt Language for General Education Schools” (2011) compiled by N. N. Timerkhanova, as well as other lexicographic publications in the Udmurt and Uzbek languages.
Results and novelty of the research: the article for the first time conducts a comprehensive study of the previously unexplored – mathematical – terminological system of the Udmurt language in comparison with the Uzbek one, which makes it possible to determine its specific signs, as well as to identify structural and typological features. The article reveals the following differential signs of mathematical terms of the languages: a) dominance of a multicomponent model of a mathematical term; b) participation of numbers, signs, and letters of the Greek and Latin alphabets in the terms formation; c) use of eponyms; and d) high density of borrowed elements in the structure of mathematical terms. Scientific novelty is determined by the fact that the article for the first time examines the structural characteristics of the Udmurt and Uzbek languages, which makes it possible to use the results obtained for typological research in the field of derivatology.
Key words: Udmurt language, Uzbek language, terminology, terminological system, mathematical terms, word-formation models, differential signs of mathematical terms
