ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article examines the scientific heritage (published works, manuscripts, collected sources) of the native of the village of Samarovo, Tobolsk Province (now Khanty-Mansiysk), the local historian Chrysanthus Methodyevich Loparev (1862–1918), dedicated to the Ostyak (Khanty) people.
Objective: to identify the place of Ugrian problematics in the scientific heritage of Ch. M. Loparev.
Research materials: Ch. M. Loparev’s drafts, prepared by him for the third edition of the book “Samarovo” and stored in the Russian State Historical Archive; his correspondence with contemporaries; published works.
Results and novelty of the research: Ugrian problematics were touched upon by Ch. M. Loparev in connection with the study of the interaction of the Russian population with the indigenous one during the annexation, settlement and development of the Samarovo Volost. Based on the identified sources, Ch. M. Loparev tried to deduce his origin from the “Yugra princes”, bringing his genealogical research to the first half of the XVI century. The work demonstrated such qualities of the scientist as scrupulousness and attentiveness in the selection of literature and sources, unhurriedness, a
positivistic approach to the presentation of the events under study. Although Ch. M. Loparev did not make significant discoveries, but he contributed to the preservation of historical sources, to the formulation of questions, the answers to which historians and local historians sought and found later. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that the versatility and diversity of the scientific interests of Ch. M. Loparev are shown, which included, among other things, individual aspects of Ugric studies problems.
Key words: Chrysanthus Methodyevich Loparev, Samarovo, Ugric studies, Siberian studies, local history, Ostyak people
