ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to the study of Khanty literature. The subject of the analysis is the image of a bear embodied in the artistic works of R. P. Rugin.
Objective: to analyze the image of a bear, to identify its functions in the works of Khanty writer.
Research materials: the legends in the literary study of R. P. Rugin, his poems, stories and novels with the image of a bear.
Results and scientific novelty: the cult of a bear dates back to the ancient mythological consciousness of the ethnos. In the ethnographic literature, interpreting the cult of a bear, attention is focused on the similarity of a bear and a man. This view is confirmed in R. P. Rugin’s prose. The writer repeatedly in his work refers to the image of the sacred animal. The image of a bear in R. P. Rugin’s prose has particular importance. Through its image the writer introduces a reader to the worldview of the Khanty ethnos. The writer’s appeal to the rites, signs, prohibitions reflects the respectful and regulated attitude of the people to the “younger brother”. A bear in the works of R. P. Rugin is not just a minor hero. Its image becomes a mean of creation of the main character, his deep understanding.
