Abstract. Introduction: the subjects of analysis in the article are the constructs, characterized by the absence of the structurally necessary parts which can be easily identified in the context. Such sentences are the so-called incomplete sentences. Objective: to consider the role of incomplete sentences in an artistic text. Research materials: the materials of the research are the works of Mordovian writers. The basic method is descriptive one, which is used for analysis of content of incomplete sentences, their functioning in the certain contexts. Results and novelty of the research: the relevance of the research is determined by the fact that incomplete sentences, their functional loading in the text never had been the object of the study neither in Mordovian linguistic, nor in Finno-Ugric one in the whole. The research revealed that among structures characterized by incompleteness of grammatical structure are distinguished: 1) simple sentences with the unnamed principal or subordinate parts, along with it all parts of the
sentence can be explicitly implied (separately and in groups); 2) complex sentences with the unnamed principal or subordinate part. Omission of the verbally implied syntactic positions does not it difficult to understand of the proposition (the missing part is present in the mind of the reader). Combining the parts of the text they actualize information giving it the subjective-modal character. In the whole, incomplete sentences give the text the dynamism, fragmentariness, laconism, intonation arrhythmia, as well as they create the illusion of a colloquialism, spontaneity in combination with condensation of the thought. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the fact that it for the first time represents the detailed analysis of content of incomplete sentences, their functioning in the certain contexts.
Key words: text, incomplete sentence, functioning in the text, incompleteness of grammatical structure, sinsemantia. Acknowledgments: the author is grateful to the anonymous reviewer for useful recommendations and valuable advices in the preparation of the article. For citation: Vodyasova L.P.
