ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article discusses the features of interethnic contacts on the example of the Khanty fishing family the Kiselyovs from the Nyalino yurts at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries.
Objective: to represent ethnic entrepreneurship as a manifestation of the phenomenon of acculturation in the conditions of the Tobolsk North.
Research materials: archival sources, socio-economic studies, as well as local lore research based on oral history, which captures the economic activities of this family.
Results and novelty of the research: the systematization of materials about the family of entrepreneurs with Khanty roots has been carried out. Descriptions of conditions of life, contacts with local residents suggest in the future the possibility of transition from an analysis of situational moments to the generalizing judgments about the role of ethnic entrepreneurship in the processes of adaptation and assimilation. Interethnic contacts between Russian old-timers and aborigines, as well as Russian culture and aboriginal culture, were ambiguous. Actors of different levels were in the local fishing industry and fishtrade. Along with large firms, societies of Russian peasants and aborigines worked. The participation of the latter was not limited to hired labor only. The fishing industry of the Kiselyovs and their successes refute this unambiguous interpretation. They prove the existence of various variants for local entrepreneurship. Attempts by a number of researchers to fit the economic life in the North into a single scheme are unpromising and contradict historical specifics. The results indicate that the acculturation and ethnic assimilation of the aborigines were realized here in various forms. Further study of the Tobolsk North brings significant corrections to the understanding of our history.
Key words: aborigines, adaptation, acculturation, family of the Kiselyovs, contacts, Nyalino yurts, entrepreneurship, fishing industry
Acknowledgements: the author of the article expresses his gratitude to the Yugra local historian V. F. Strus.
