ABSTRACT
Introduction: in the article the author turns to the analysis of the dialect words koira / koiru / koir ‘a dog’ in the linguistic picture of the world of the Karelians. The author considers the linguocultural aspects of the zoonymic component in the proper Karelian, Livvik and Lyudik subdialects of the Karelian language. The analyzed lexeme is dual: it has both positive and negative connotations.
Objective: to analyze the names koira ‘a dog’ to clarify its role in the formation of the Karelian linguistic picture of the world.
Research materials: Karelian-language linguistic sources (dictionaries of dialects of the Karelian language, dialect samples of Karelian speech, phraseological dictionary of the Karelian language).
Results and novelty of the research: for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of the Karelian lexeme koira ‘a dog’ in the linguistic picture of the world is presented. The research has shown that the component koira is part of Karelian lexemes, in which the main composite is a word modifying gender features. In two-part lexemes denoting a dog and containing the composite koira, the motivating feature of the nomination may be the animal’s habitat, animal’s actions, a name of an animal (zoonym) that the dog hunts. In a number of complex names of plants and diseases in the dialects of the Karelian language, the genitive form koiran- ‘canine’ is traced, giving a negative or positive connotation. The name of a dog has become a component of a fairly large number of idioms (more than 60) that have become firmly embedded in the language. With the help of the zoonym component koiru / koira various personality traits are described in the Karelian language.
