The Mari language in the structure of the linguistic competence of the population of the Republic of Mari El in the XXI century

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article characterizes the competence status of the Mari language in the context of the problem of linguistic diversity in the Republic of Mari El in the XXI century in a diachronic aspect. The problem is considered taking into account such factorial opposition as groups on ethnic self-identification (first of all, Mari and Russians – two main andmost numerous groups of the population of the Republic); for individual positions, attention is focused on the difference between the results obtained, in general, in the Republic, and among young people.
Objective: to determine the place of the Mari language in dynamics of the linguistic competence of the population of the
Republic of Mari El in the XXI century.
Research materials: data of sociological studies of the Mari Research Institute of Language, Literature and History named after V. M. Vasiliev of 2001–2020.
Results and novelty of the research: the problem of the place of the Mari language in the linguistic competence of the population of the Republic of Mari El is considered in the context of creation of a diachronic picture of the linguistic diversity in the region. The objective required the addition of traditional methods of description and analysis of the obtained sociological data by their comparative study throughout the XXI century, which is being carried out for the first time. The article updates both the respondents’ assessment of their own linguistic competence and their linguistic intentions. The issue of the Mari language proficiency of the Mari population of the Republic of Mari El is highlighted.
