ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to the reconstruction of the clothing name in the proto-Uralic, Finno- Ugric and subsidiary Finno-Ugric proto-languages.
Objective: to analyze the origin of words describing clothing and footwear names in the Finno-Ugric languages, and to trace how the system of clothing names in the native vocabulary has changed over time in the
daughter Finno-Ugric languages.
Research materials: the existing most complete dictionaries of the Finno-Ugric languages.
Results and novelty of the research: the article reconstructed 13 new etymologies. As far as we can judge from the data of the reconstruction, the following dynamics was observed in the Finno-Ugric language speakers
in the system of clothing names: for the PU language (V–IV thousand BC) were reconstructed: the general name of clothing was *pVśV, *punV ‘pants’, *śuma ‘hat’, *üw ‘belt’, *wüŋä ‘belt’, and *l’ɨppe ‘shoes/leg wraps made
of skins’. The difference from primitive people actually differs only in the supposed presence of pants. In the third thousand BC, native speakers of the Finno-Ugric proto-language appeared wearing outerwear similar to a
‘shirt’ *śopa, ‘mittens’ *peśV, and ‘jewelry’ *śirV. Judging by the reconstructed names of clothing, significant development occurs in the future only in the Ob Ugric peoples at the beginning of our era, when there is a special
name for the ‘fur coat’ *săk and ‘dress’ *wūč.
Key words: Finno-Ugric languages, proto-Uralic, proto-Finno-Ugric, proto-Ugric, proto-Ob-Ugric, proto-Permian, Finno-Volgaic, etymologies, comparative historical linguistics, names of clothing.
