ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article deals with the question of the composition and classification of particles in the Karelian language. Particular attention is paid to the interpretation of the concept of “particle” in grammars of the Karelian language, the problem of classification of particles and their origin.
Objective: a comprehensive description of the particles functioning in the Livvik dialect of the Karelian language.
Research materials: particles in the Livvik dialect of the Karelian language.
Results and novelty of the research: the novelty of the research lies in the fact that up to the present time, no complex multidimensional research of this part of speech on the material of the Karelian language has been carried out. The classification proposed by the authors of the article significantly expands the composition of particles reflected in the wellknown grammars of the Karelian language and encompasses groups of both word-forming particles that focus the speaker’s attention on the communicative goal and rheme of the utterance, and form-building particles that make changes in the
objective-modal meaning of the predicate. There are nine functional-semantic categories of particles: interrogative, imperative, emotional, affirmative, negative, emphatic, restrictive, modal, and indefinite. Particles are subdivided into prepositive and postpositive according to their location in relation to the accented word. The controversial nature of the taxonomy of particles is emphasized, as well as the problematic differentiation of affixal formants, on the one hand, and function words, on the other, in connection with the spelling norm of the fused spelling of pre- and postpositive particles in the Karelian language. From the point of view of origin, most of the particles of the Karelian language are original in nature and are grammatical homonyms of other significant or content or function words; there are also particles borrowing from the Finnish and Russian languages. The frequency of the use of discourse words, including particles, is one of the typological (taxonomic) criteria that make it possible to compare different languages and regional variants, as well as functional styles within one language. Particles as modus-pragmatic words clearly illustrate the features of the ethnic picture of the world reflected in the language, and therefore they are the richest material for anthropological research, including logical-semantic, cognitive, communicative, psycholinguistic and linguoculturological ones.
Key words: Karelian language, Livvik dialect, Russian language, particles, classification, morphology, rhematisation of utterance.
Acknowledgments: the authors express their gratitude to Petrozavodsk State University.
