ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article deals with the functional and semantic features of polysemantic conjunctions, determines their location in the sentence structure, examines the stylistic properties and origin of the required units. In the analyzed language, the polysemy is inherent to separate individual coordinative and subordinative conjunctions. Most of them have two main meanings.
Objective: to identify polysemantic conjunctions that function in the modern Mari (Hill and Meadow) language; to determine their origin, location and describe functional, semantic, and stylistic features.
Research materials: the research is based on a sample of examples with the conjunctions that was taken by the author from card index material of Mari Scientific and Research Institute of Language, Literature and History and from Mari literature fiction texts of different authors.
Results and novelty of the research: for the first time a comprehensive description of the polysemantic conjunctions of the Mari language is given. We identified and analyzed five polysemantic conjunctions, and one of them has several meanings only in the Hill Mari literary language. The origins of three means of communication go back to the Russian language, two units were formed on the basis of the Mari language. Russian borrowings in the Mari language in most cases retain their semantic, but change certain stylistic and syntactic properties. They mainly express two meanings, whereas the Mari conjunctions actually belong to several semantic groups. Separate coordinative conjunctions are characterized by the combination with specifiers, some subordinative conjunctions are able to be used with correlates in the main clause.
Key words: the Mari (Hill and Meadow) language, conjunction, polysemy, origin, scope of use, position, function, semantics.
