Polysemy of the verbs of self-destruction pokhty and tokhty in the Khanty language

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article examines the periphery of the semantic field of destruction on the material of the Khanty polysemous verbs pokhty and tokhty. From the standpoint of lexical typology, the secondary semantics of the verbs of selfdestruction is considered on the material of three dialects of the Khanty language – Kazym, Shuryshkar, and Uralic.
Objective: to identify the potential of metaphorical transfers of the basic verbs pokhty and tokhty, as well as their derivatives, based on the semantic and structural analysis of these lexemes; to outline the circle of contexts in which the meanings of these verbs intersect.
Research materials: the author’s field materials, dictionaries of the Khanty language, folklore collections.
Results and novelty of the research: for the first time, the systematization and correction of the semantics of these lexemes is carried out; their direct and figurative meanings are analyzed. To date, the compatibility of such verbs has not been described. A complete list of them has not been identified. In the available dictionaries on the Khanty language, these verbs are described with varying degrees of detail. As a result of the analysis, we have revealed that the zone of spontaneous destruction is adjacent to the semantic fields of sound, movement, sensations of pain, emotions, mental and physiological spheres of human activity due to the metaphorical meanings of these lexemes. The article notes that the meaning of these verbs depends on the syntactic environment, which forms semantic and grammatical features: sentence models, actionality, morphology and semantics change.
