Abstract:Yuvan Shestalov is the man of traditional culture, brought up from infancy in the world of folklore, mythology, rites and rituals. His psychology, values and world outlook were formed in accordance with traditional attitudes. Relation to folklore of the writer has varied at different stages of his creativity; however the interpretation of folk motifs in each subsequent period was in relation to the previous one. Shestalov believes that the events and characters of the myth did not just ‘once exist’, but they continue to live in present. The basis of the myth for him is his awareness as well as his faith in that reality, which announce about unity of reality of the cosmos and the earth. In the works he evaluates life from the point of view of the worldview of his ethnos, formed for millennia and received fullest expression in the mythology and folklore. At the same time, folklore and mythological material allows him to comprehend the mentality and traditions of his people. The key component of the mythological problematics of the writer’s works is the fact that after 1990-ies Shestalov rethought the mythological and oral poetic origins of the traditional culture of the people: on their basis he created his vision about cosmic and planetary consciousness (consciousness of Torum); in this vision he tried to point the way of the spiritual salvation of his people and all mankind.
Key words: Yuvan Shestalov, myth, mythological picture of the world, Mansi, Torum, Mansi literature.
