ABSTRACT
Introduction: the presented article is devoted to the consideration of the names of the disease “hernia” in the dialects of the Karelian language, their motivational, etymological, and word-formation analysis. The studied thematic group is of interest from the standpoint of the diversity of dialect forms, their phonetic features. The study involved data from other Baltic-Finnish and Russian languages in order to identify contact phenomena.
Objective: to reveal the ways of formation of hernia naming in dialects of the Karelian language.
Research materials: dialect dictionaries of the Karelian language, samples of Karelian speech.
Results and novelty of the research: the article for the first time provides a systematic analysis of Karelian dialectisms that nominate the disease “hernia”, which determines the scientific novelty of the study. 21 lexical units identified from various Karelian sources (dialect dictionaries, samples of Karelian speech, etc.) are subjected to a comprehensive analysis. As a result, the author comes to the conclusion that the thematic group under consideration is quite fully preserved in the Karelian language, including names of various origins: Baltic-Finnish heritage, borrowings, and deverbal names. Semantic
changes and calquing can be traced in the vocabulary. The motivational aspects in the formation of names are the type of disease and a part of the body / organ where the hernia was formed. The theoretical significance of the study is determined by the opportunity to expand knowledge about the vocabulary of the Karelian language. The practical significance lies in the application of the results obtained in the course of research in lecture and practical courses on the Karelian language (dialectology, lexicology, development of oral speech, ethnography).
Key words: Karelian language, dialects, names of hernia, etymological analysis, word formation.
