ABSTRACT
Introduction: the consonant system of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language has not been fully studied, and difficulties are associated with the specific features of this idiom. According to experimental studies one of them concerns
the alternation of fricative bilabial [w], guttural non-labialized [ɣ] and guttural labialized [ɣ°].
Objective: to establish of the phonological status of bilabial [w], non-labialized guttural [ɣ] and guttural labialized [ɣ°] consonants in the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language using experimental phonetics methods.
Research materials: phonetic questionnaires recorded by the staff of the Institute of Philology of the Siberian Brunch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk in 2014 and in the Ugut village of the Surgutsky District of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Yugra in August 2019, processed using Praat software.
Results and novelty of the research: the article explores the differentiation of bilabial [w], non-labialized guttural [ɣ] and guttural labialized [ɣ°] consonants with experimental phonetics techniques. It was found that the sounds are allophones of two phonemes: the non-labialized guttural fricative and bilabial fricative, which are neutralized at the end of the word in the position after a rounded vowel and in the intervocalic position after a rounded vowel.
Key words: Surgut dialect of the Khanty language, guttural consonants, labial consonants, specific sounds, experimental phonetic methods, Praat, oscillography, spectrography
Acknowledgements: the author expresses sincere gratitude to N. B. Koshkareva and T. V. Timkin for their support and valuable advice, as well as to the informants who speak the Khanty language, thanks to whom this research became possible.
