Abstract. The fi rst data about people of Khanty, Mansi and Nenets are related to the XI century. There is no reliable information about population of Ostyaks and Voguls at the time of joining of Siberia to the Russian state after the well-known campaign of Ermak. According to A.A. Dunin-Gorkavich all population of Tobolsk North, according to 1904, was 38 693 souls of both genders, including foreigners of 26 148 souls. The population registration is conducted on census, last one took place in Russia in 2010, the others were during Soviet and Post-Soviet periods.
For 1st of January, 2012 the population of Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous okrug is 1 561 238 persons, including indigenous small people of the North of 31 428 persons. Of the total number of indigenous people of the North, there are 9 748 children under 14 years of age, teenagers from 15 to 17 years are 1 736 persons. Among indigenous people of the North, there are 21 702 persons of Khanty, 9 106 persons of Mansi, and 620 persons of other representatives of indigenous people of the North.
The main areas of residing of Khanty are – Beryozovsky, Beloyarsky, Nizhnevartovsky, Surgutsky, Khanty-Mansiysky areas, cities – Nefteyugansk, Nizhnevartovsk, Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk. Mansi live mainly in Beryozovsky, Kondinsky, Sovietsky, October areas and in the cities of Uray, Nefteyugansk, Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk
