Revitalization of the Sami language: the language environment of the village of Lovozero

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article describes the linguistic environment of the village of Lovozero, a place of compact residence of the indigenous small–numbered people of the North – the Sami, in accordance with the criteria for its measurement developed by UNESCO experts and methodological recommendations for the research of the linguistic environment. The position of the Sami language on the territory of Murmansk Oblast is determined based on the results of sociolinguistic studies of recent years. The necessity of expanding the language environment for the successful revitalization of the language of the indigenous people of the Arctic is substantiated.
Objective: to analyze the possibilities of the existing language environment for the revitalization of the Sami language.
Research materials: the sociolinguistic studies of 2014–2022 and the results of own field practice in May 2022 obtained in the village of Lovozero.
Results and novelty of the research: the article for the first time analyzes the linguistic environment of the village of Lovozero, a place of compact residence of the Sami people, according to UNESCO criteria and using methodological recommendations for its survey. The research allowed us to come to the conclusion about the insufficient level of development of the language environment, which is a significant factor in the revitalization of the Sami language.
