Abstract. The article analyzes the cultural aspects of the formation of the native city and province images in the XIII – beginning of XVII centuries. During this period, the transformations of cities and change of their statuses took place. Birth of Russian civilization led to the gradual displacement of marginals. The characters of hero and executioner were naturally displaced to the periphery. Russian nation took the image of a priest, but not always clearly fi xed. The images of the city reveal the people’s awareness of the time of the humanized space specifi city and its historical evolution.
