ABSTRACT
Introduction: for the first time the author of the article presents the semantics of the preverb lӑp / lap as a word-formative element of adverbial origin with the general meaning of closing, covering together with verbs of different lexical and semantic groups: action, closing, motion, movement, position, state, etc. There are still no a full list of verbs with the preverb lӑp / lap and detailed description of change of their verbal valence on the material of the Khanty and Mansi languages. The preverb modifies or changes the meaning of a verb according to its syntactic compatibility; at the same time the syntactic compatibility can determine the grammatical form of a verb.
Objective: to identify verbs with the preverb lӑp and describe the change of valence of verbs, their semantic and syntactic compatibility for further systemic description of preverbs; to study regularities of the transition of a verb from one semantic class to another; to compare with their functional correspondences
in different dialects of the Khanty and Mansi languages; to expand the understanding of the grammatical structure of the Ob-Ugric languages.
Research materials: the research is based on verbs with the preverb lӑp/lap of the Kazym, Shuryshkar, Uralic dialects of the Khanty and Mansi languages (Upper Lozva dialect), collected by the author from informants and partly extracted from the dictionaries of the Kh anty and Mansi languages.
Results and novelty of the research: mainly the preverb lӑp/lap adds itself to verbs of action, movement, state, covering, closing, motion, etc. As the result, we observe change in the number of valences of derivative verbs – their retention or reduction. Verbs of motion, movement lose the locative valence; a part of verbs of
action, covering, closing, changing of state do not change the valence. The change in the composition of the semantic group of verbs is caused by the syntactic compatibility of a verb with different types of subjects and objects (animate and inanimate). The specific of derivative verbs with the proverb lӑp is the change of
semantics or verbs, change of structure of their valence or exp ansion of the meaning of a number of verbs. The results of the research can be used in the comparison of cognate and multi-structural languages, as well as for writing of scientific grammar of the Khanty language .
Key words: preverb, valence, lexical-semantic group, verbs of movement, covering, closing, motion, semantics.
Acknowledgements: the author expresses gratitude to anonymous reviewers, as well as to all informants, who are fluent in Khanty and Mansi languages and feel the nuance s of the meanings of their words.
