Semantics of the proverbs of the Mari language with the zoonyms imne ‘horse’ and ushkal ‘cow’

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article analyzes the semantic features of the proverbs of the Mari language, the lexical composition of which contains zoonyms imne ‘horse’ and ushkal ‘cow’.
Objective: to identify semantic peculiarities of the proverbs with zoonyms imne and ushkal; to systematize them taking into account these peculiarities and their pragmatic function.
Research materials: Mari proverbs and sayings with zoonyms of domestic and wild animals.
Results and novelty of the research: as a result of the study, it has been found that the proverbs with zoonyms imne ‘horse’ and ushkal ‘cow’ contain a wide variety of semantic dominants. According to the content plan, these proverbs are systematized into three groups: 1) single-plan proverbs with direct meaning; 2) two-plan proverbs with direct and figurative meaning; 3) single-plan proverbs with figurative meaning. The study shows that these proverbs characterize either a person or a situation in which a person may find himself. In addition on the basis of the analysis, the authors confirm that the figurative meaning is presented implicitly in a number of proverbs, their interpretation depends on the specific situation. The scientific novelty of the research consists in describing possibilities for systematization of Mari paremias based on their semantic plan for the first time.
