Abstract:The article examines the role of the largest Finno-Ugric researcher of the first half of XIX century A. Sjögren in the study of Mari language. During his five-year trip to Russia (1824–1829), he visited the different ethnic groups – Karelians, Finns, Veps, Saami, Komi-Zyrians, Komi-Permians, Udmurts, including the Mari. A. Sjögren was the first Finnish scientist, who in 1828–1829s visited regions where the Mari lived. Being among the Meadow, Eastern and North-Western Mari of Malmyzh, Urzhum, Sarapul, Yelabuga, Yaransk Counties of Vyatka provinces and Vetluga County of Kostroma province, he conducted a comprehensive study. He used field collected materials to continue working at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He also has got manuscripts of the second half of XVIII century sent from different ethno-territorial of Mari living regions for comparative dictionary of P.-S. Pallas. In his studies A. Sjögren also used the First Mari grammar of 1775. A.J. Sjögren was the first Finnish-speaking researcher, entered into close cooperation with the Russian Academy of Sciences. Under the influence of A. Sjӧgren status of Finno-Ugric Studies it was fixed at the Academy of Sciences and received a huge potential for further development. He is the author of many grammars, bilingual dictionaries on Finno-Ugric and Caucasian languages.
