ABSTRACT
Introduction: the paper presents a description of some models of Mari pronominal phrases with personal pronouns as the head. So far, they have not been the subject of research. The study of the phrases was carried out using such methods as descriptive and structural, as well as contextual analysis.
Objective: to give an analysis of pronominal phrases with dependents, expressed by constructions with postposition kokla gych ‘of, amongst’ (NOMkokla gych + PRONpers) and koklashte ‘in the middle’ (NOMkoklashte + PRONpers), as well as by the negative pronoun iktat ‘nobody’ (PRONpers pl + PRONneg iktat).
Research materials: materials on the Meadow-Eastern Mari literary norm from an electronic collection created for the corpora of the Mari language (about 20 million words).
Results and novelty of the research: in the system of Mari pronominal phrases units consisting of personal pronoun as a head and a dependent constituent expressed by constructions with the postposition kokla gych ‘of, amongst’, koklashte ‘in the middle’ and by pronoun iktat ‘nobody’ commonly occur. Because of the peculiarities of the meanings in the models NOMkokla gych + PRONpers and NOMkoklashte + PRONpers pronouns are used mainly in singular, whereas in the model PRONpers pl + PRONneg iktat only in plural. The semantics of the personal pronouns determins the fact that most often nominals in the dependent position denote an animate object. Nominals in postpositional constructions may be plural as well as singular. All models have attributive realtions – they modify a persons and in some cases inanimate objects upon their environment, as well as they express the meaning “none of the named set of persons”. Phrases with postpositional constructions are based on control, whereas with negative pronouns on agreement. The novelty of the paper lies in the fact that for the first time the above mentioned models of phrases have been identified and analysed. There were established and explained the peculiarities of the performing of the main and dependent constituents, as well as semantic and grammatical relations in the phrases.
Key words: Mari language, pronominal phrases, models, personal pronouns, nominal postpositional constructions, negative pronouns, grammatical relation, grammatical meaning
