ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article studies and describes the intonation features of speech in texts of the Komi works of fiction. The Komi prose under consideration is rich in descriptions of various events with illustrations of dialogues of original Komi speech. The author’s attention is focused on the study of the timbral characteristics of the voice, description of its quality.
Objective: to identify and describe the features of the timbral characteristics of speech’s voice of characters in the Komi works of fiction.
Research materials: examples extracted from published literary texts, as well as from the electronic Komi language corpora “Komi Kyv Corpus” (https://komicorpora.ru/).
Results and novelty of the research: the scientific novelty of the research lies in the new presented results of a comprehensive study of timbral characteristics of speech in the Komi works of fiction, which had not previously been subjected to linguistic description in the Komi language. It has been established that timbre is an important component of intonation. In the prose text, the author uses words to convey a character’s voice, which contain information about feelings and emotional state, physical and socio-psychological characteristics of a character. A detailed description of speech’s
features by the authors of the works made it possible to identify standards of voice quality and characterize it as “pleasant” and “unpleasant”. “Pleasant” voice is characterized by a clear and open sound, with clear vibrations, free functioning of the larynx without special articulatory inclusions not typical of segmental units. Deviations from the standard pronunciation include infantile voice, aphonia, dysphonia, and a nasal (open and closed) voice. The results of the study can be used in the comparative study of unrelated and differently structured languages, as well as in the practice of teaching the Komi language in higher school.
Key words: Komi language, prosody, intonation, timbre, work of fiction
Acknowledgments: the publication was prepared as part of the implementation of the state assignment of the FRC “Komi Science Center, Ural Branch, RAS”, the state registration number of the FUUU-2021-0008 project “Permian Languages in the Linguistic and Cultural Space of the European North and the Urals”.
