Introduction: the article analyses the Turkic component in the toponymic vocabulary of the Mordovian languages in connection with the genesis of the peoples of the Middle Volga region. The Mordovian peoples began to contact with the Turkic-speaking peoples in the middle of the second millennium. The Moksha and Erzya peoples lived side by side with the Tatars, who are called the Mishars in ethnographic literature. At the beginning of the XIX century, the Mishars lived in 80 villages on the territory of Mordovia. In 2002 there were 60 Mishar settlements in the Republic of Mordovia.
Objective: to identify the Turkic component in the toponymic vocabulary of the Mordovian languages, to reveal their etymology and to analyze their word-formation structure.
Research materials: toponyms of Turkic origin, extracted from the toponymic dictionaries of the Mordovian territory, as well as the two-volume edition “Mordovia. Encyclopedia”.
Results and novelty of the research: the authors of the article have analyzed 90 units of toponyms of Turkic origin in the toponymic vocabulary of Mordovian languages which were extracted from various Finno-Ugric studies as well as from language dictionaries. Toponyms of Turkic origin have been found on the territory of residence of the Moksha and Erzya peoples. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the authors have defined the basic principles of toponyms nomination, which create an opportunity not only to reconstruct former landscape of a certain area, but also shed light on economic
activity, on the history of the people of the region..
Key words: toponym, Mordovian language, Moksha language, Erzya language, Tatar language, village, village, river
