Udmurt toponymic vocabulary in the Russian written monuments of 16th – the first quarter of the 18th century

Abstract. The article deals with the analysis of the Udmurt lexical material, identified in the written records made in the Russian language in the 16th – the first quarter of 18th centuries. The studied realities of the Udmurt language were taken from various documents: charter of 1511, the materials of homestead census of Karinsky district of Vyatka area (1615, 1629, 1646, 1662, 1678, 1701, 1717) and Udmurt homestead census on Arsk road of Kazan area (1716). As a result of working with archival sources and published materials it became clear that local Russian literary texts of the 16th – the first quarter of 18th centuries contains records of the Udmurt words related primarily to the areas of anthroponomy and toponymy. The study found that Udmurt appellatives participating in the naming of geographical objects are quite diverse, there are productive and unproductive ones. As a result of research the ways of placenames and gydronyms formation are established, certain patterns in their structural models are traced; characteristics of graphic recording of the Udmurt sounds made by the drafters are highlighted. The Udmurt words contained in Russian literary texts of 16th – the beginning of the 18th centuries reflect the stage of the Udmurt language development. Thus, linguistic material introduced for scientific use will allow adding and expanding the source base of the Udmurt linguistics.
