The analysis of the factual material showed that these constructions, in addition to filling pauses in speech, help a communicant to keep the attention of an interlocutor, give time to remember and choose a right word, as well as the opportunity to correct the utterance. It can be confidently stated that they contribute to successful communication by performing the following functions: hesitative (fill in pauses when difficulties arise in the process of speech production), search (signal the search for a relevant verbal unit to continue utterance), discursive (act as a tool for organizing speech). A distinctive feature of this type of constructions is that in the process of speech generation, in order to prevent the occurrence of long pauses (breaks) they can replace any word or syntactic construction.
