ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article traces the history of fixation of the word kuzyo ‘a master’ in the Udmurt language from the earliest written monuments to modern lexicographic works. The development of the semantics and graphic design of this lexeme and its origin are considered.
Objective: to identify in the written monuments of the Udmurt language the word kuzyo ‘a master’; to analyze its semantic development; to determine the etymology of the word.
Research materials: written monuments of the XVTII-XIX centuries, modern lexicographic publications on the Udmurt language, as well as materials from related and contacting languages.
Results and novelty of the research: for the first time, in the work the history of the word kuzyo ‘a master’ in the Udmurt language is traced. As is known, the written fixation of Udmurt words in dictionaries and grammars began in XVIII century, and the earliest texts (mainly translated and folklore) appeared only in the middle of XIX century. On the basis of these data, graphic and orthographic metamorphoses and semantic transformation of the lexeme kuzyo over the last three centuries in the Udmurt language are considered. The study found that the graphic appearance of the word was formed by the end of XIX century. The expansion of the lexical content of kuzyo in the course of the development of the language, as well as the loss of one of the meanings (‘a merchant’) by now, has been found. The etymological analysis revealed that the word was borrowed from the Bulgar language and is included in the common Udmurt vocabulary. The results of the study can be embodied as a historical part of the historical and etymological dictionary of the Udmurt language.
