To the problem of enriching the vocabulary of the Mari language

ABSTRACT
Introduction: enriching vocabulary by creating new words and terms in many languages of the peoples of Russia and the world remains relevant to the present. The lack of scientific, technical, economic, socio-political terminology hinders the full functioning of native languages as state languages in the Finno-Ugric republics of the Russian Federation. Borrowed vocabulary from the Russian language is used in these areas. The compilation of new words concerning many spheres of life and activity of the Mari people, including office work, the introduction into scientific circulation of neologisms of the 1920s–1930s, the “revival” of words that have fallen out of use, the introduction of dialectisms into the vocabulary of the Mari literary language was actively engaged in the widely known in the Finno-Ugric world Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor I. G. Ivanov. A deep connoisseur of his native language, he always emphasized that the Mari language is not “poor” in terms of vocabulary, as it was customary to think and talk about it. The article is devoted to the analysis of ways and methods of formation of new words in the Mari language on the material of one of its dictionaries.
Objective: to identify productive ways of word formation, to trace trends in the enrichment of the lexical fund of the Mari language.
Research materials: dictionary “Mutvundym poidarena. U mut-vlak muter” (“Enrich the Vocabulary. Dictionary of New Words”) by Professor I. G. Ivanov, research papers devoted to the problem of enriching the vocabulary of the Mari language.
Results and novelty of the research: the analysis of new words from the point of view of their ways of formation shows that for the Mari language, derivation and word composition are the most productive. These methods are used in the formation of all independent parts of speech. A new way in word formation proposed by I. G. Ivanov is conversion. It is characteristic for the creation of new nouns. The scientific novelty of the study is that the dictionary was analyzed for the first time in terms of the possibilities of creating new words in the Mari language.
