Abstract. The article analyzes the shifts in public conscience of the people of the Soviet era by the example of works of fiction. There is a transition from eschatological expectations by the spirit of which the story of A. Tolstoy “Viper” and the novel of I. Golovkina (Rimsky-Korsakova) “Conquered” are permeated, to the growth of ability to resist against the cruel totalitarian conditions of consolidated group (A. Kron “House and ship”) and individual (U. Slepukhin “Southern Cross”).
