ABSTRACT
Introduction: one of the important tasks of modern education in Russia is the formation of the ethno-cultural competence of students. It is conditioned by the need to educate children and youth to respect the culture, traditions and history of their people, as well as to understand and accept the cultures of other peoples living in a multinational country.
Objective: to identify the problems of the formation of the ethno-cultural competence of the child in the family in modern conditions.
Research materials: data from the authors’ monitoring study “The role of the family in the formation of an individual’s ethno-cultural competence”, statistical information on the state of ethno-cultural education in the Udmurt Republic.
Results and novelty of the research: the article confirms the key role of the family in the formation of an individual’s ethno-cultural competence. The influence of the parents’ native language proficiency on the formation of the child’s language competence is analyzed. For
the first time, the main problems in the formation of the key components of the ethno-cultural competence of children of the Udmurt Republic (including ethno-cognitive, socio-behavioral, and motivational-value) in the family have been identified. Irregular use of the mother tongue in everyday family communication, insufficient knowledge of the traditions and customs of their nation by parents and their limited use in the home, the negative attitude of parents towards their native language and culture prevents the uniform and full-fledged development of all components of the child’s ethno-cultural competence. The harmonious development of a child is possible when creating an optimally balanced environment in which the native language is regularly used, cultural heritage is broadcast, and basic moral norms and behavioral patterns are consolidated. These conditions will ensure the formation of a stable ethno-cultural identity and the comprehensive development of personality.
Key words: ethno-cultural competence, personality, native language, family, motivation, interaction, educational space
